Emergency Information

If you suffer or witness a threat to life or property, dial 9-1-1.

However, during hurricanes, snow storms, and in other sorts of emergencies that affect large portions of Cary, the Town will be getting the word out to you as soon as possible and in many different ways. We always post information as it happens on our website, our social media outlets.

We use the 24-Hour Town Hall telephone service to provide recorded message updates, and we utilize Town Hall TV (cable channel 11) to update you as well. For most weather-related emergencies, we'll activate our telephone hotline-469-4090 for you to call to speak to a real person.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 UNLESS you have a LIFE-THREATENING problem.

To speak with someone reguarding non life threatening concerns, please call 469-4001.

Sewer Overflow or Stoppages

When a stoppage or sewage overflow occurs contact the Public Works & Utilities Customer Service Department.

During normal business hours

(919) 469-4090

Outside of normal business hours

(919) 469-4012

The Town will assess the stoppage to determine if the blockage is on the Town's side of the sewer line or the home-owner's side of the sewer line.

The Town of Cary will clear blockages that occur in the main sewer line or in the sewer lateral, from the main line to the clean out pipe at the edge of the property. The sewer clean out is a vertical, capped, 4" pipe that provides direct access to the sewer system.

Homeowners are responsible for blockages that occur in the sewer lateral, located between the clean out pipe and the dwelling. If there is no clean out pipe at the edge of the property, the homeowner is responsible for blockages that occur anywhere in the sewer lateral.

Whenever a customer experiences a water leak inside a home or business, the main water shut off valve should be located and turned off.

If the valve cannot be located or shut off, call Public Works & Utilities Customer Service to have the water meter shut off so repairs can be made.

During normal business hours

(919) 469-4090

Outside of normal business hours

(919) 469-4012

The homeowner is responsible for repairs both inside the home and from the dwelling to the water meter.

The Town is responsible for repairing leaks in the street or between the street and the meter.

If there is an unusual increase in water consumption on your Town of Cary utility bill, consider checking around the hot water tank and underneath the house for water leaks. Toilets can also be checked for leaks by performing a dye test.

Contact our Finance Department at
(919) 469-4050 to further discuss a water consumption increase or contact the Water Conservation Assistant at (919) 469-4387 to schedule a water audit.
